L-Tryptophan in Depression and Strain

This paper is a report by the author of his Ph.D. Thesis. When the organism is put under exertion (load), changes in the organism result (strain). The strain is counteracted by forces mobilized in the body (stress). Stress is a physiological phenomenon. If people become ill from any type of exertion, this will, by definition be the result of strain. The (biological) changes observed in ill people can be classified as: 1) specific to the clinical picture, or 2) strain phenomenon, or 3) stress phenomenon, or 4) incidental finding. The psychic expression of strain is the mood disorder anxiety, even when the mood disorder depression causes the strain. L-tryptophan, an amino acid, is converted in the body into (a) serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), a neurotransmitter of the raphe neuronen in the brain, and into
